There is no single flag that represents the entire continent of Africa, as it is made up of 54 individual countries, each with its own national flag. However, there are several symbols and flags associated with pan-Africanism and African unity. One of the most recognized is the Pan-African flag, also known as the Afro-American flag or the Black Liberation flag. It consists of three horizontal stripes of red, black, and green.
The colors have specific meanings:
- Red: Represents the blood that unites all people of Black African ancestry and that has been shed for liberation.
- Black: Represents the people whose existence as a nation, though not a nation-state, is affirmed by the existence of the flag.
- Green: Represents the rich land of Africa.
Additionally, the African Union, an organization consisting of all 55 African countries, has its own flag. The flag features a green field with a white sun and a gold map of Africa in the center, encircled by 53 gold stars representing the member states.
