Who named Africa Africa?

The name “Africa” has a complex history with various theories about its origin. One widely accepted theory suggests that the name comes from the ancient Roman designation for a region they called “Africa terra,” which referred to the land of the Afri people in the region of modern-day Tunisia and parts of Northern Africa.

The term “Afri” itself is believed to be derived from a Berber word, ifri or ifrane, which means “cave” or “cave dwellers.” The Romans later used the term to refer to the broader region of North Africa that they had conquered, and eventually, the name was applied to the entire continent.

There are other theories and possible origins of the name, but the Roman connection is the most commonly accepted.
